The Fortress as a prison

When the occasional residential use during the Della Rovere period disappeared, the fortress was used as a papal prison. The graffiti on the first floor and the adaptation of some underground rooms to prison cells are proof of this function. The use as a prison established in the pontifical age was continued in the post-unification period.
